The Happytime Murders and Crazy Rich Asians Face Off this Weekend, with Both Projecting the Same Amounts
Melissa McCarthy's R-rated Muppets film The Happytime Murders is set to go head-to-head this weekend with critical darling Crazy Rich Asians.
Crazy Rich Asians, which has already seen so much massive success on a small-scale that a sequel is in the works, took in $35M over its five-day run last weekend, and is currently projecting $10M-$15M for this packed weekend. Facing off against The Meg and The Happytime Murders, the latter of which is also projecting for $13M-$15M.
The Meg, the shark thriller which has turned out to be a massive hit in North America, is eyeing low teens for its third weekend. Crazy Rich Asians, The Happytime Murders, and The Meg are all going to experience similar box office takes this weekend, but the real competition is between the former two.
The only film releasing this weekend that none of the above have to worry about is soon-to-be box office bomb Axl. The children's film about a robotic military dog is poised to take in low single digit numbers this weekend and only open in less than 2,000 theaters.
The box office will be a tough battle this weekend, with crude Muppets satire facing off against representation and a bad Rotten Tomatoes score.
