OPINION: Top 5 San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Movie Trailers

OPINION: Top 5 San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Movie Trailers

San Diego Comic-Con 2018 was one of the most exciting comic cons in the last few years. The biggest TV and movie stars all showed up and did not disappoint. Like every year, SDCC brought the reveal of many highly anticipated trailers. Even without Marvel there to add to the excitement, Warner Bros, and DC made sure they took advantage of the solo stage. Here are the top 5 movie trailers from San Diego Comic-Con 2018. This list was compiled of only the footage that was shown to the public excluding movies such as Venom, Halloween, and Bumblebee.

5. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

After the 2014 monster clashing thriller, Godzilla returns with the help of some friends. Even though the movie releases in May of next year, fans were very excited to see footage from the next installment in the Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures “monster-verse”. This movie also introduces the Netflix mega show Strangers Things very own Milly Bobby Brown, who is starring in her first blockbuster hit. We all can’t wait to see how this movie brings us one step closer to the monster heavyweight battle between Godzilla and King Kong, which is set to release in the summer of 2020.

4. Shazam

Warner Bros and DC really brought out all the guns by bringing us our first look at Billy Maddison as the mythical Shazam. The trailer takes us through a small portion of the Billy Batson backstory and even shows how he was granted the powers of Shazam. The rest of the trailer is just Billy Batson trying to understand and test out all the powers he was granted with.  For most fans, a small dosage of footage was expected, but a full-blown public trailer was not. The movie definitely gives us a lighter tone movie to fit into the so-called dark DC Cinematic Universe. I think it’s safe to say that after seeing the trailer, we are all excited for the addition of this character into the DC Universe.

3. Glass

Next on the list is the M. Night Shyamalan’s next installment after the major success of Split and the built up success of Unbreakable which was released in 2000. The major characters in each film come together in one of the biggest crossover events which is set to hit theaters in 2019. This was one of the most anticipated trailers for Comic-Con and it did not disappoint.  James McAvoy is reprising his Oscar nominating role as Kevin Wendall Crumb and all of his multiple personalities is not one who will sell us short in this soon to be classic.

2. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald

Anytime you are dealing with the world of Harry Potter, there is always pressure to deliver a masterpiece and that’s what Fantastic Beasts gave us with the first movie. The first movie showed us a world before the existence of Harry Potter and how everything came to be in the movies we all love. The new Fantastic Beasts trailer showed us our first look at Johnny Depp as the villain and even gives us our first look at a young version of Dumbledore. This movie seems very promising and will live up to the expectations of the Wizarding World.

1. Aquaman

Coming in at number one on my list is Arthur curry himself Aquaman. Ever since Jason Momoa made his big-screen debut as Aquaman in Justice League, fans have been waiting for this solo film. It came as no surprise that DC and Warner Bros would be releasing this trailer, but the trailer was spectacular. The trailer paints the story picture as Arthur Curry’s half-brother wants to wage war on the land dwellers. In order for it to be stopped Arthur Curry must accept his role as the king and unite the seven kingdoms. Aquaman is splashing into theaters December 21 and it has much promise to be a good one. After all, DC is not bad at giving us solo movies.
